Larsen & Toubro’s Long Road: Scaling Infrastructure and Inclusion

Larsen & Toubro’s Long Road: Scaling Infrastructure and Inclusion

L&T commands a unique position in the construction sector, with half of its operations spanning 50 countries. Despite this global reach, the company’s identity remains tethered to its Indian roots. According to Garg, the firm’s decision-making process prioritizes customer needs above all else, a philosophy that has fostered deep-rooted partnerships with major players like Komatsu and Tata Steel. This commitment to long-term stability rather than transactional gains has allowed L&T to remain a dominant force in infrastructure.

Pioneering Change

Beyond traditional construction, the company is actively dismantling industry barriers. In 2024, L&T partnered with Tata Steel at the Noamundi Iron Mine to deploy an all-female team of engineers and operators. By training women to manage heavy machinery, including 100-metric-ton payload trucks, L&T challenged entrenched gender stereotypes within the mining sector. Garg notes that while shifting mindsets remains a hurdle, the success of this initiative has prompted other steel companies to pursue similar inclusive models.

Innovation remains at the core of the firm’s strategy. From introducing hydraulic excavators in the 1970s to current digital integrations for spare parts logistics, the company aims to lead rather than follow. Guided by the motto 'In service lies success,' L&T continues to invest in technology and personnel, viewing the development of India’s infrastructure as a core responsibility. As the country moves into a new phase of growth, the company focuses on creating safer, more equitable systems, ensuring that its legacy of service adapts to the requirements of a modern economy.
