The partnership, which aims to allow users to buy digital books directly from independent retailers while using Kobo hardware, had previously slipped from a 2025 target to 2026, before appearing to stall indefinitely. Hunter noted that the delay stemmed from complex negotiations involving digital rights management requirements and the need to reallocate engineering resources, which were previously tied up in developing the company’s mobile app.
While the company is now confident the collaboration will proceed, a definitive release date remains elusive. Until the integration launches, Kobo owners seeking to avoid purchasing solely from Rakuten have limited alternatives. Users can currently sideload DRM-free titles or access library books via Overdrive. Alternatively, those prioritizing local bookstore support can opt for Android-based e-readers like Boox or Meebook, which are capable of running the existing Bookshop.org mobile application.
