X Debuts In-App Video Editor to Combat Platform Repost Culture

The update, spearheaded by head of product Nikita Bier, arrives as the platform grapples with a persistent reliance on stolen content. Bier intends for these tools to foster a genuine creator ecosystem, noting that a significant portion of top-performing accounts currently rely on material repurposed from years-old viral clips. While the new functionality allows for more creative control, its success hinges on whether it can compete with the robust monetization and copyright protection frameworks offered by rivals like YouTube and Meta.

Beyond technical upgrades, X faces structural hurdles in reclaiming its reputation. The platform lacks automated tools for creators to claim ownership or monetize stolen work, leaving original authors vulnerable to scraping. Additionally, the prevalence of automated accounts complicates engagement metrics; Bier recently cited that the platform is suspending over 200 bots per minute to maintain signal integrity. Currently, video content accounts for nearly half of all impressions on X, making the shift toward original production a critical move to improve both user experience and long-term business viability.
