Venkatachalam brings a nuclear-grade safety culture to the thermal sector, prioritizing behavior-based training for over 5,000 contractors. His expertise in commissioning, honed during his time at the Kakrapar Atomic Power Project, proved vital in reviving stalled assets like the Ghatampur Thermal Power Station in Uttar Pradesh. Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s inauguration of the plant’s first unit in May 2025, the project has become a cornerstone of NLCIL’s operational recovery.
Beyond stabilizing existing infrastructure, the company is shedding its historical reliance on lignite. NLCIL plans to double its total capacity to 10,200 megawatts by 2030, supported by a $15 billion investment strategy. This roadmap envisions a balanced energy basket where renewable capacity eventually matches thermal output. By targeting 2.4 trillion units of power generation within five years, Venkatachalam intends to transform the seven-decade-old firm into a diversified energy powerhouse.
