Alongside accomplices Kevin Martin and Ryan Goldberg, he targeted U.S. businesses throughout 2023. In one instance, the group successfully extorted $1.2 million, laundered the proceeds, and split the take. The Department of Justice seized over $10 million in assets linked to the operation, including a luxury fishing boat and a food truck purchased with illicit funds.

The case underscores a disturbing trend of security insiders exploiting their positions to profit from the ransomware sub-sector. While firms often hire negotiators to reduce ransom costs, these individuals abused that trust to fuel the BlackCat operation. The gang, also known as ALPHV, remains a significant threat, having been linked to the massive 2024 breach at Change Healthcare that exposed the sensitive data of 192 million Americans. Despite government warnings against paying ransoms, the prevalence of these attacks continues to drive demand for the very services the convicted trio subverted.
