Google expands Gemini lineup with three specialized Flash models

The new suite includes Gemini 3.6 Flash, positioned as a high-performance workhorse that improves coding and multimodal capabilities while cutting token consumption by 17%. Alongside it, the company debuted Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite, designed for maximum cost-effectiveness, and 3.5 Flash Cyber. The latter, a specialized tool for identifying and patching security vulnerabilities, will initially remain restricted to government entities and select partners through a pilot program.

Despite these updates, the absence of a new Gemini Pro model remains the most significant aspect of the launch. The flagship line has not received a major update since February, leaving a widening gap as rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic continue to iterate on their own frontier models. Product lead Logan Kilpatrick confirmed that Gemini 3.5 Pro is currently undergoing partner testing, though reports suggest internal development has faced hurdles in meeting performance targets. While the company shifts its focus toward an ambitious pre-training run for Gemini 4, the current strategy emphasizes high-speed, low-latency utility for developers building AI agents at scale.
