Sila Secures $300M to Scale Silicon Anode Production

The expansion arrives at a volatile moment for the automotive industry, as domestic EV demand faces headwinds from shifting policy landscapes. While U.S. sales remain suppressed compared to previous spikes, global demand continues to climb, with Benchmark Minerals Intelligence reporting a 27% year-over-year increase. Sila’s technology offers a strategic alternative to the graphite-based anodes that currently dominate the market, a supply chain largely controlled by Chinese firms and vulnerable to international trade tariffs.

Founded by former Tesla employee Gene Berdichevsky, the company has spent 15 years developing materials that store up to 40% more energy than standard graphite counterparts. With existing supply agreements in place with Mercedes and Panasonic, Sila is positioning itself to capture a broader market, including consumer electronics and the growing sector of grid-scale energy storage for AI data centers. The latest funding round was led by Atreides Management and Sutter Hill Ventures, bringing the company’s total raised capital to roughly $1.6 billion. The Moses Lake facility, which began initial production in September, is now slated to expand from its current 2 gigawatt-hour capacity to tens of gigawatt-hours per year.
