Surveillance footage captured an individual wearing a hoodie and hat filling grounds-crew containers with the chemical before applying it across the putting surfaces. Although the university did not disclose the breach until July 16, they have since lowered rates for non-student golfers to compensate for the damaged greens. The lack of clear motive has baffled observers, as the color does not align with the branding of major athletic rivals like Ohio State or Michigan State.

This incident follows a similar pattern of sabotage in the region. In 2023, the private Detroit Golf Club suffered significant damage when an intruder applied glyphosate to two of its greens, necessitating an expensive re-sodding project just before a PGA Tour event. Sam Moynihan, the club’s director of agronomy, noted the financial strain such attacks impose on facilities, emphasizing the difficulty of identifying perpetrators who target these vulnerable landscapes.
