Market intelligence firm Similarweb reports that the transition from traditional blue links to AI-generated answers has significantly altered online behavior. As users adopt longer, conversational queries, the time spent within Google’s own ecosystem has climbed. This evolution is mirrored by a surge in AI Mode visits, which doubled from 126 million in June 2025 to 279 million by May 2026.
Publishers face mounting pressure as referral traffic dwindles, with AI citations often failing to drive clicks. While the number of responses featuring citations has grown fivefold, they remain insufficient to replace lost traffic. Some relief may be on the horizon, however. Following a May 2026 update, ChatGPT desktop referrals to external webpages jumped from 25% to nearly 60%, suggesting that users still value direct links when they are clearly presented. Despite these pockets of improvement, Google’s aggressive integration of AI continues to redefine the search landscape at the expense of the open web.
