Cursor Launches Low-Cost India Subscription Ahead of SpaceX Acquisition

The startup's strategy leverages India's position as its third-largest global market, where the user base has tripled over the past year. Cursor Start grants access to the Composer 2.5 model and Grok 4.5, alongside cloud agents and mobile integration, while omitting access to third-party frontier models from companies like OpenAI and Anthropic. According to Simon Green, head of Asia-Pacific and Japan, this tier is designed for commercial sustainability rather than as a loss leader, utilizing Cursor's own lower-cost models to maintain margins.

To manage the rollout, Cursor is implementing strict measures to prevent VPN-based abuse and now supports India’s Unified Payments Interface. The expansion extends beyond pricing, with new sales and government affairs personnel joining in cities including Bengaluru, Chennai, and Delhi. While the current model is exclusive to India, Green suggested that the company may replicate this localization strategy in other international markets if the pilot proves successful.

This growth initiative precedes the anticipated Q3 closing of Cursor’s $60 billion acquisition by SpaceX. Although the startup continues to operate independently, Green noted that SpaceX’s existing Starlink infrastructure in India could eventually streamline Cursor’s operational footprint. The company is currently focusing on individual developers and startups, with plans to court larger banking and enterprise clients as its local sales team scales.
