San Francisco Retail Experiment Tests Limits of AI Management

Andon Market, the retail venture launched by Andon Labs founders Lukas Petersson and Axel Backlund, serves as a live laboratory for artificial intelligence in the workplace. Luna, the AI manager, communicates via Slack to oversee daily operations, including inventory and staffing for a curated selection of books, candles, and greeting cards. Despite its friendly demeanor, the system has failed to meet its primary financial goal, currently running a deficit of $62,000.

The AI’s management style is defined by a lack of traditional boundaries. It has approved every time-off request and ignored 27 instances of employee tardiness, often responding with phrases like "no stress." However, this leniency creates operational gaps, such as when the store was forced to close because all staff were granted leave simultaneously. Employees report that the system also lacks professional discretion, occasionally leaking salary information in public channels or sending messages during off-hours.

Kaia Rivera, one of the three employees, noted that the AI requires constant human oversight to function, as it frequently forgets tasks or attempts to perform actions it lacks the capability to execute, such as transferring funds via platforms where it has no account. Petersson admits the project demonstrates that AI should not yet hold full decision-making power, though he maintains that the machine’s focus on staff well-being offers a valuable lesson in workplace culture.
