Ford Targets Budget EV Market with $28,350 Fathom Truck

The Fathom arrives during a cooling period for electric vehicle demand, marking Ford’s third attempt at a battery-powered truck. CEO Jim Farley has tasked a specialized engineering team, led by former Tesla executive Alan Clarke, with developing the vehicle outside of traditional corporate constraints. By utilizing a clean-sheet design rather than modifying existing architectures, the company intends to bypass the range and packaging compromises that plagued previous efforts like the F-150 Lightning.

Technical specifications for the base model remain limited, particularly regarding the range offered by its standard lithium iron phosphate battery. While the vehicle will feature bidirectional power capabilities and integration with Apple Maps, it will notably lack support for Apple’s CarPlay Ultra. Buyers will also find the truck BlueCruise-ready, though enabling the hands-free driver assistance system will require an additional subscription fee. With the average new car price hovering near $50,000, Ford is banking on the Fathom to replicate the success of its affordable Maverick pickup, aiming to capture a segment currently occupied by few competitors.
