Bluesky faces user exodus as mobile engagement drops

According to digital intelligence firm Similarweb, Bluesky’s mobile presence has seen a sharp contraction. Monthly active users fell to 10.4 million in June 2026, a 27.2% decline year-over-year. Daily activity shows a similar trend, dropping 25.6% in July to approximately 3 million users. While the platform boasted 22.1 million monthly active users in the final quarter of 2024, that figure has plummeted by 52% to 10.7 million by the second quarter of 2026.

Under new CEO Toni Schneider, the company is pivoting its strategy away from pure app dominance. Instead, the focus has shifted toward the underlying AT Protocol, which powers emerging communities like BlackSky, Eurosky, and the video-centric Skylight. The firm is also diversifying its utility through tools like the AI-powered research assistant Attie and planned support for private data structures. While Bluesky’s engagement numbers falter, competitors are capturing the market share; Meta’s Threads reported a 21.3% increase in daily active users, reaching 147 million in July 2026, while X continues to see its own mobile usage decline.
