OpenAI Brings ChatGPT to Linux Desktops

The new application targets primary distributions including Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, and Fedora 43 and 44. By prioritizing these specific environments, OpenAI aims to capture a broad range of downstream desktop flavors that rely on these systems as a foundation. The company noted that this expansion ensures their tools are now available across every major desktop operating system.

This move places OpenAI in direct competition with Anthropic, which deployed its own Linux desktop app for Ubuntu 22.04 and Debian 12 roughly one month ago. While the Linux landscape encompasses hundreds of unique distributions, this latest release signals a shift toward broader platform inclusivity for generative AI interfaces.
