Apple Alerts Users to Mercenary Spyware Attacks Across 110 Countries

The company has refined its notification system to guide users toward immediate defensive measures, including the activation of Lockdown Mode. According to Apple, this specialized security setting has proven impenetrable to known spyware attacks to date. While such intrusions remain statistically rare, their deployment by governments against journalists, activists, and political rivals has increased, making these alerts a vital early warning system for high-risk targets.

John Scott-Railton, a senior researcher at Citizen Lab, praised the updated notification process as a major improvement over the company’s initial 2021 rollout. He noted that these alerts serve as a critical catalyst for wider investigations, citing the discovery of the spyware scandal in Poland as a direct result of such warnings reaching targeted individuals. Without these prompts, many instances of targeted digital abuse would likely remain undetected.
