Hackers leverage AI to exploit US water infrastructure

The threat actors use AI to generate exploit scripts by scouring publicly available data for poorly secured or outdated programmable logic controllers. These devices manage automated physical processes in sectors ranging from wastewater treatment to agriculture. While the technology is sophisticated, experts note that many of these industrial systems remain inherently fragile due to poor configuration and persistent internet connectivity.

Recent intelligence points to an escalation in activity following a series of intrusions linked to suspected Iranian hackers. Facilities in Minnesota, Michigan, Arkansas, Georgia, and New Jersey have already reported security breaches. CISA continues to urge operators to disconnect critical controllers from the public internet, noting that rural communities are particularly susceptible to these disruptions due to the expansive geographic reach of their utilities.
