Apple’s Camera-Equipped AirPods Face Privacy Backlash

The footage, pulled from a macOS 26.7 release candidate, confirms that Apple intends to use low-resolution sensors to bridge the gap between physical surroundings and its AI toolset. Although the company maintains these sensors are strictly for scanning environments rather than traditional photography, the internet has quickly dubbed the devices “pervertpods.” Critics fear the normalized use of wearable cameras in social settings, a challenge similar to the one Meta encountered with its own smart glasses.

Despite the leak, the hardware is not imminent. Internal supply chain bottlenecks and ongoing software development have delayed the project, pushing the release window from an initial 2026 target into 2027. Apple is reportedly navigating these concerns carefully, attempting to lean on its established privacy-centric brand image to mitigate the discomfort surrounding the hardware's presence in public spaces.
