Uber adds live video monitoring for teen accounts

Once a ride begins, guardians receive a notification if a video stream is available. Opting to view the feed triggers an automatic alert to both the driver and the minor passenger. While Uber maintains that the video is encrypted, the company declined to confirm if the data is end-to-end encrypted, leaving questions about whether the platform itself retains access to the footage.

Privacy concerns persist regarding other passengers who might be traveling with the teen, as the system provides no mechanism for them to opt out of the live feed. The feature is currently active in nine markets, including Atlanta, Cleveland, and Rhode Island. Following its initial launch of teen accounts in 2023, which has since scaled to over 50 countries, Uber is positioning this monitoring tool as a core component of its safety infrastructure. Once the journey concludes, the live stream terminates and becomes inaccessible to all parties, including drivers and parents.
