Anthropic secures $45 billion compute deal with Nscale

This transaction marks a significant escalation in Anthropic’s strategy to secure heavy-duty infrastructure, mirroring a broader industry trend among AI labs to stockpile processing power. Nscale, a startup established in 2024, has rapidly positioned itself as a critical supplier, having already secured contracts with Microsoft. The upcoming deployment will utilize the Vera Rubin architecture, a complex system integrating six unique chips to handle intensive machine learning workloads.

The West Virginia project is the latest in a rapid sequence of massive capital outlays by Anthropic. Within the last eight months, the company has finalized a $10 billion supply deal with Norwegian startup Volta, a $5 billion commitment to AMD, and a substantial arrangement with SpaceX. These partnerships supplement existing capacity expansions with Amazon, Google, and Broadcom. As the competition against rivals like OpenAI intensifies, Anthropic is prioritizing long-term access to proprietary hardware to maintain its competitive edge.
