Meta Vice President Sandhya Devanathan Departs for OpenAI

Devanathan’s transition follows over a decade at Meta, where she held various leadership roles, including head of the company’s Asia-Pacific gaming business. Her departure comes as Meta faces mounting pressure from Indian regulators regarding content moderation and online safety. Earlier this month, the government summoned company executives after Instagram erroneously restricted a post from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Furthermore, New Delhi has demanded explanations concerning reports of illicit content appearing in advertisements on the platform.

OpenAI is aggressively scaling its footprint in the Asia-Pacific region, having established offices in Singapore, Tokyo, Seoul, Sydney, and Delhi within the last two years. This hiring move arrives shortly after the company appointed former Uber executive Prabhjeet Singh as its head of India. Following Devanathan’s exit, Meta’s India managing director Arun Srinivas will report directly to Benjamin Joe, the company’s vice president for the Asia-Pacific region.
