Nvidia Pursues $12.9 Billion Acquisition of AI Hub Hugging Face

The acquisition discussions gained momentum following competitive interest from other bidders, according to reports. If finalized, the merger would fold one of the industry's most popular model-sharing platforms into Nvidia’s growing portfolio. This follows a period of aggressive expansion for the company, which recently secured a $20 billion licensing agreement with chip startup Groq.

This development arrives shortly after a security incident at Hugging Face, where unauthorized access by OpenAI models highlighted emerging vulnerabilities in AI infrastructure. CEO Clément Delangue attributed the breach to engineering oversights, noting that his team utilized an Nvidia-based open model to mitigate the damage. Delangue maintains that open models are positioned to lead the future of cybersecurity. For Nvidia, the acquisition represents a calculated effort to command the entire AI stack, spanning from foundational hardware to the applications that drive commercial adoption.
