Circleback pivots to free tier to challenge meeting-tech incumbents

The new free plan offers unlimited meeting transcriptions, mobile and Apple Watch access, and AI-powered query capabilities, alongside integrations with Slack and Linear. Users are limited to a 30-day history, a move that mirrors the strategy recently adopted by competitors like Granola. For power users, paid subscriptions start at $14 per month when billed annually, unlocking full API access and permanent storage.

Co-founders Ali Haghani and Kevin Jacyna established Circleback in 2023, securing $2.5 million in funding the following year. Despite the intense industry competition, the company reports it has been profitable with a lean team of eight. Haghani noted that previous trial constraints caused significant user drop-off, prompting the shift toward a free-to-use model that functions as the company's primary marketing engine. By bypassing traditional paid advertising on platforms like Google or Meta, Circleback aims to lower the barrier to entry and convert casual users into long-term customers. While the company claims to be outperforming larger, better-funded rivals, Haghani maintains that they remain open to future fundraising only if capital becomes a necessary lever to clear specific growth bottlenecks.
