Clipto functions as a localized search engine for personal data, indexing videos, audio, images, and documents directly on a user’s machine. Instead of manual folder navigation, users retrieve specific assets by describing them, or by tasking AI models like ChatGPT and Claude to locate relevant clips. Founder Henry Kang, who previously sold his video startup ZenVideo to Tencent, launched the company in 2023 to address the shift from content scarcity to surplus.
While the platform initially targeted video creators, its user base has expanded to include legal, medical, and academic professionals. The company reports over 30 million lifetime users and hundreds of thousands of paying subscribers, reaching $15 million in annual recurring revenue by early 2026. Despite competition from Adobe, Apple, and Google—which maintain integrated search features within their own ecosystems—Clipto differentiates itself by operating locally and offering cross-platform indexing. By prioritizing local processing and recently adopting the Model Context Protocol, the startup allows users to connect their private data to third-party AI agents without relying on cloud-based storage. The new capital will fund further infrastructure development to optimize these AI models for consumer-grade hardware.
