Polymarket Secures $300 Million Investment From 1789 Capital

The backing from 1789 Capital follows a previous $200 million investment from the firm, which is known for supporting unconventional technology ventures such as the Enhanced Games. This latest round of funding arrives at a volatile moment for prediction markets, which face mounting pressure from state-level regulators. Currently, at least 20 states are involved in litigation against such sites, primarily challenging the legality of sports-related wagering.

While state governments push for stricter local oversight, the federal stance remains largely protective of the industry. The Trump administration has consistently maintained that the Commodity Futures Trading Commission should serve as the exclusive regulator, effectively preempting state-level intervention. This position has led to federal lawsuits against nine states attempting to enforce their own rules. A coalition of 44 state attorneys general recently contested this federal authority, asserting that the CFTC lacks the jurisdiction to oversee sports-based bets. Donald Trump Jr. has publicly defended the existing structure, characterizing the industry as already subject to sufficient federal oversight.
