Waymo Expands Robotaxi Reach to Denver, San Diego and Tampa

The company is rolling out access to riders in these new territories through its established testing protocol. By starting with invited users and gradually increasing availability, Waymo aims to replicate the operational maturity seen in cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles. This growth push relies on a combined fleet of over 4,000 vehicles, including the Jaguar I-Pace and the newly introduced Ojai minivan.

In Denver and San Diego, the Ojai—a Zeekr-manufactured vehicle equipped with Waymo’s sixth-generation autonomous system—will serve as the primary platform. While the current Ojai fleet remains modest at approximately 300 units, the company views this model as a cornerstone for future profitability due to lower manufacturing and maintenance costs. The expansion comes as Waymo faces stiff competition from Tesla, which is currently operating driverless Model Y rides in Texas and Florida, and eyeing future deployments of its custom-built, pedal-less Cybercab.
