Newlight’s Hydrogen Retrofit Promises Massive Savings for Cargo Ships

The system acts as an intelligent regulator for massive diesel engines. Rather than seeking raw speed, the technology monitors combustion pressure, exhaust temperature, and air intake in real-time. By injecting hydrogen at millisecond intervals, it optimizes the combustion cycle, allowing the engine to dial back its primary fuel intake. For shipping operators, this translates to annual savings reaching $500,000 per vessel.

Newlight recently validated its technology during an 8,500-nautical mile commercial voyage from Singapore to Ghana. Installed on a 650-foot Lomar Shipping bulk carrier, the system achieved a 24% reduction in fuel use and a 28% drop in carbon dioxide emissions. CEO Haran Cohen Hillel described the month-long trial as a landmark transition from laboratory theory to reliable, real-world performance.

This early success has drawn significant financial backing. The startup secured a $9 million seed round led by investors including lomarlabs, BIRD Energy, Undeterred Capital, and CiRi Ventures. With agreements already signed to outfit 12 additional vessels, the company is positioning itself as a leaner alternative to competitors betting on ammonia or methanol, which often require invasive engine modifications. While the founders see potential for their technology in data centers and rail transport, their immediate focus remains on scaling within the global maritime industry.
