Reliance Jio Targets Aging PC Market With Cloud-Based AI Subscription

The expansion of JioPC, previously restricted to the company’s broadband subscribers, allows any user to access up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage via the cloud. Subscription plans start at ₹1,000 for two months, with annual tiers reaching up to ₹5,000. This model targets the country's 65 million existing PCs, many of which are nearing the end of their typical five-to-six-year replacement cycle.

Reliance is betting that consumers will favor renting computing capacity over purchasing new machines. Analysts note that while this could create a new, affordable tier for students and cost-conscious households, it faces significant hurdles. Unlike traditional hardware, the service requires a constant, stable internet connection to function. Furthermore, the company must overcome a cultural preference for physical ownership and competition from the robust market for refurbished computers. The ultimate success of the service depends on whether users view cloud-based computing as a reliable daily utility rather than a temporary workaround.
