Google secures 400 MW of geothermal power from Fervo for Utah site

The deal marks a significant expansion of the partnership between the two companies, which began over five years ago. With Google aiming to reach net-zero emissions by 2030, the shift toward enhanced geothermal energy provides a necessary alternative to the fossil fuel reliance seen in recent Texas data center projects. Fervo’s Cape Station site holds substantial potential, with current permits allowing for 2 gigawatts of development and internal estimates suggesting the location could eventually support double that capacity.

Expanding this project to its full potential would effectively double the current geothermal generating capacity across the United States. Following the announcement, Fervo’s stock price surged approximately 30%, reflecting investor optimism despite recent volatility. As hyperscalers scramble to secure reliable, carbon-free baseload power for energy-intensive AI operations, the success of this enhanced geothermal project could serve as a blueprint for future large-scale utility procurement.
