Math Professor Accuses OpenAI of Poaching Millennium Prize Research

The dispute concerns one of the seven Millennium Prize problems, which offers a $1 million bounty for a breakthrough in fluid mechanics. Buckmaster and Anthropic mathematician Levent Alpöge, who utilized OpenAI’s Codex model in their research, allege that OpenAI’s team pivoted to their exact methodology only after information about their progress was leaked. Buckmaster contends that the technical path they chose was obscure, making OpenAI’s sudden alignment on the same strategy highly suspicious.

OpenAI’s mathematical research lead, Sebastian Bubeck, dismissed the allegations as false and inflammatory, asserting that he operated within standard academic norms. However, Buckmaster claims that Bubeck pressured him to remove Alpöge’s credit and suggested that going public with the grievance would jeopardize his career. The professor also raised concerns that his proprietary interactions with the Codex model may have been absorbed into OpenAI’s training data, potentially allowing the company’s systems to replicate his findings. OpenAI has not commented on whether user data influenced their internal research efforts.
