OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic Align on AI Safety Standards

The alignment follows a public plea from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who recently urged the industry to throttle the pace of frontier model development. Major figures including Sam Altman and Demis Hassabis have voiced support for this shift, with Altman committing to integrate third-party evaluators to monitor model safety. While Amodei initially proposed a government waiver to protect these companies from antitrust litigation, Lehane maintains that such legal safeguards are unnecessary for their current cooperation.

Industry leaders are now working toward an independent standards body, a move Altman suggested could proceed without formal government backing. This effort exists in a tense political climate; while companies seek to self-regulate, President Trump has characterized safety concerns as a hoax, warning that regulatory slowdowns could compromise U.S. competitiveness against China. David Sacks, a key advisor to the administration with significant industry ties, has similarly dismissed existential risk projections. Despite this friction, OpenAI continues to push for provisions within the FRONTIER Act that would mandate independent verification for the most powerful AI systems.
