Discord implements behavioral age screening for all users

Discord CTO Stanislav Vishnevskiy confirmed the transition in a recent blog post, noting that regional age-verification laws in places like Texas and Brazil necessitated a more robust approach. While the company previously faced intense criticism over potential biometric data leaks—highlighted by a third-party vendor breach last year that compromised 70,000 users' ID photos—the new system relies on existing metadata. Discord claims that over 90% of its user base will avoid manual verification through this passive analysis of account tenure and usage behavior.

To train this predictive model, the platform utilized data from regions where strict age-assurance requirements were already in effect. If the system remains uncertain about a user's age, the company provides alternative appeal methods, such as linking credit card data or store-based age verification from Apple and Google. For those flagged as teens, the platform imposes tighter restrictions, including restricted access to adult servers and filtered message requests. As global regulatory pressure mounts, Discord is attempting to balance legal compliance with the ongoing privacy concerns of its community.
