US Users Lead Global Anxiety Rankings Over Artificial Intelligence

A new study conducted by Gallup across 37 countries reveals a stark divide between Western skepticism and emerging market optimism. While Americans harbor significant reservations about the technology’s trajectory, nations such as Singapore, China, and Israel report high levels of confidence, with majorities expecting AI to improve both their individual lives and national prospects. This international disparity suggests that familiarity with the tools does not inherently translate into public trust.

Domestic anxiety in the U.S. remains high even among power users, with only 45% of daily AI adopters expressing confidence in the accuracy of the results they receive. This skepticism is compounded by intense public discourse surrounding labor market displacement, the environmental cost of training large models, and potential threats to cybersecurity and data privacy. According to Pablo Diego-Rosell, a senior scientist at Gallup, these attitudes are fundamentally multidimensional: individuals often report simultaneous feelings of curiosity and apprehension.

Though global sentiment remains net-positive—with curiosity being the most cited emotion—the political landscape is shifting. High-level security officials, including China’s Chen Yixin, have begun framing AI as a potential threat to institutional and ideological stability. As investments continue to pour into the sector, the Gallup data indicates that exposure alone will not mitigate the growing demand for stricter regulatory frameworks and oversight in sensitive fields like healthcare, education, and government.
