Google Gemini gains ability to make phone calls for users

The experimental feature, slated for Pixel 11 users with a Gemini subscription in the U.S., marks a significant expansion of Google's voice automation efforts. By utilizing the beta version of the Android Phone app, the AI will handle the tedious process of calling stores or service providers, whether to check product stock, reschedule appointments, or secure a reservation. The system is designed to navigate complex IVR menus and wait on hold until a human representative responds.

Unlike previous iterations of AI assistance, this tool allows for the sharing of approved personal information to complete requests. Users remain in the loop through a live transcript that updates in real time, granting them the ability to intercept and take over the conversation whenever necessary. Calls are placed directly from the user's own phone number, maintaining a direct line of communication. Google plans to limit the initial rollout, citing the unpredictable nuances of real-world human interaction as the primary reason for a cautious, iterative approach to the technology.
