Databricks expands AI toolkit with Row Zero spreadsheet acquisition

The integration centers on Genie, Databricks’ native AI agent, which allows users to query complex business data through natural language. By merging Row Zero’s interface with this backend, Databricks aims to eliminate the friction of traditional business intelligence software. Users can now manipulate data within a spreadsheet environment while keeping sensitive information secured in the cloud, preventing the risks associated with exporting data into standalone, insecure files.

Founded by former AWS and Tableau engineers, Row Zero secured $10 million in May 2025 at an estimated $40 million valuation. While terms of the current deal remain undisclosed, the move underscores a broader strategy for Databricks. CEO Ali Ghodsi confirmed the company intends to pursue further acquisitions to strengthen its ecosystem. This year alone, Databricks has absorbed several specialized firms, including AI evaluation startup Quotient AI, interactive notebook developer SiftD.ai, security firm Panther, and PGlite database maker Electric. With $5 billion in fresh funding closed last August and an annualized revenue run rate hitting $7 billion, the company is aggressively consolidating tools to ensure its AI agents remain the primary interface for enterprise data analysis.
