The MIT Dropout Steering Meta’s AI Future

Mark Zuckerberg recruited the Scale AI founder in June 2025, following a $14 billion investment that granted Meta a 49% stake in Wang’s data-labeling venture. Since the September 8 launch of Muse, which automates multi-step background tasks, the app has become a central pillar of Meta’s current growth strategy. However, Wang’s unconventional leadership style is creating friction within the corporate culture.

His penchant for thrift-store attire and provocative social media campaigns—including suggestive memes of the app’s mascot—has alienated parts of the workforce. Tensions are further exacerbated by the aggressive compensation packages offered to his TBD Lab recruits. Scale board member Mike Volpi noted that such high-stakes maneuvering is bound to ruffle feathers, even as the market rewards the rapid deployment of Wang’s technology.
