Petra Power Targets Data Centers and Military with Fuel Cell Tech

Traditional power generation relies on a multi-step process—explosions, heat, and motion—that results in significant energy loss. According to founder Aaron Goodman, Petra’s technology streamlines this by converting natural gas into electricity in a single step. This approach appeals to sectors where footprint and fuel costs are critical constraints. The company currently operates with a staff of 15, focusing its development on two primary markets: data centers and the U.S. Department of Defense.

Commercial adoption remains in the early stages, with the company targeting 2028 for its first deployments with cloud infrastructure providers. While hyperscalers represent the most significant potential clients, Petra has yet to secure firm agreements with major industry players. Simultaneously, the company is testing its fuel cells for military use, specifically to provide auxiliary power for land vehicles when main engines are idle. Having secured nearly $9 million in defense contracts, Petra is now working through the evaluation phases required for live deployment. The firm was recently named to the TechCrunch Startup Battlefield 200, highlighting its visibility as it attempts to scale production by 2029.
