The company’s rollout follows a familiar playbook: mapping, followed by testing with safety drivers, before removing human operators entirely. By partnering with Toronto-based Element Fleet Management, Waymo plans to support hundreds of local jobs in maintenance, validation, and operations. This move represents a significant test of the company’s ability to navigate climate conditions far harsher than its typical U.S. markets.
Since 2023, the firm has accelerated its global footprint, expanding from three markets to active deployments in 15 U.S. cities, including recent launches in Austin and Atlanta. Alongside these efforts, Waymo is currently testing in London and Tokyo. Co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana described the Toronto entry as a critical milestone, as the company seeks to prove its technology can handle the unique operational demands of a major Canadian city.
