US Commerce Department blocks new Polestar EV sales

Polestar confirmed the mandate on Thursday, noting that the restriction prevents the rollout of future models despite the company’s efforts to secure a special exemption. The manufacturer intends to clear its existing inventory of Polestar 3 and Polestar 4 vehicles while maintaining service support for current American owners.

This regulatory hurdle arrives shortly after the administration granted Volvo—which shares the same parent company—permission to continue its U.S. operations. In response to the exclusion, Polestar leadership announced a pivot toward European expansion, emphasizing that 94% of its retail volume during the first quarter of 2026 originated outside the United States.
