Apple Vision Pro leader jumps to OpenAI hardware team

Beyond the Vision Pro, Meade oversaw the development of upcoming smart glasses slated for a 2025 launch. Apple views these wearable devices as a critical response to competition from Meta, particularly after the high-priced Vision Pro failed to capture mass-market interest. His exit coincides with a broader reorganization of Apple’s hardware engineering leadership, a move reportedly linked to the eventual transition of John Ternus to the CEO role, which left several veteran executives feeling sidelined.

OpenAI continues to aggressively court design and engineering talent to realize Sam Altman’s vision for a post-smartphone device. While the company is currently collaborating with Jony Ive on hardware that aims to be less intrusive than the iPhone, reports indicate the project has faced significant developmental hurdles. Neither Apple nor OpenAI has provided immediate comment on the staffing change.
