Anthropic introduces rupee-denominated pricing for Claude in India

The new pricing structure lists Claude Pro at ₹2,000 per month for annual billing, while Team plans start at ₹2,399 per seat. These rates, which incorporate local taxes, remain higher than their U.S. counterparts. Despite the shift to local currency, Anthropic has yet to integrate the Unified Payments Interface, the dominant instant payment network in India. This leaves users reliant on credit cards or mobile app store billing, a notable contrast to OpenAI, which integrated UPI support alongside its own rupee-based rollout in August.

This pricing update follows a series of strategic maneuvers by the AI firm to deepen its presence in the region. Since opening a Bengaluru office in February and appointing former Microsoft India executive Irina Ghose to lead local operations, Anthropic has secured partnerships with IT giants Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services. These efforts aim to stabilize a market presence that faced volatility earlier this year, when the company briefly restricted access to certain models for non-U.S. entities. While India remains a highly price-sensitive environment, the move signals a calculated attempt to convert a massive developer audience into long-term enterprise subscribers.
