The capital arrives as the firm shifts from research toward heavy infrastructure. Resources are currently funneled into the construction of Sparc, a demonstration reactor, while engineers finalize the design for Arc, a commercial-scale power plant slated for Virginia. CEO Bob Mumgaard has signaled that additional fundraising rounds remain likely to sustain this rapid scaling.
Technically, the company relies on magnetic confinement, using intense fields to hold plasma at the extreme temperatures required for atomic fusion. The goal is to harvest the resulting heat to drive steam turbines. Management expects the Sparc unit to reach scientific breakeven by 2027—the critical threshold where energy output exceeds the power required for ignition. While only the National Ignition Facility has hit this milestone to date, corporate interest is already locked in. Italian energy giant Eni has agreed to purchase over $1 billion in electricity from the future Arc plant, with Google committing to acquire 200 megawatts of its capacity.
