Google Opens Gemini and Search Ecosystem to Third-Party Developers

The strategy mirrors a broader industry pivot, with competitors like ChatGPT and Meta also competing to become the primary gateway for digital tasks. To maintain relevance, Google is moving beyond its internal suite—which already includes Photos and Workspace—by allowing external developers to submit apps via the Model Context Protocol. This infrastructure lets partners like Adobe, Peloton, and Calm register their services through the Google Connected Console, choosing whether their tools appear in Gemini, Search, or both.

For developers, the platform provides a dashboard to monitor traffic, latency, and error rates, ensuring they retain control over their brand identity and verified assets. While Google currently hosts over 50 integrations in Gemini, the expansion into Search is set to accelerate over the coming weeks. Currently in a U.S.-only beta, the platform functions as an early attempt to define the rules of engagement for the agentic web, potentially mirroring how search engine optimization once dictated digital visibility for the modern enterprise.
