Tesla Hits 10 Million Vehicle Milestone Amid Scaling Challenges

Reaching this milestone took six years of intensive production, following the company’s first million vehicles. However, the path to the 20 million goal by 2035 remains fraught with uncertainty. Tesla has yet to surpass 2 million annual sales, a pace that suggests the company may struggle to meet its long-term output objectives without a significant shift in market momentum. While domestic competitors like Rivian and Lucid grapple with scale, Tesla faces its own headwinds, evidenced by a 13% year-over-year drop in U.S. sales during the second quarter.

Beyond simple manufacturing volume, Musk’s compensation plan requires progress across three other pillars: 10 million active Full Self-Driving subscriptions, one million humanoid bots, and one million robotaxis. Currently, FSD subscription numbers hover near 1.5 million, with the robotics and robotaxi divisions still in nascent development. Compounding these operational hurdles, the company’s adjusted EBITDA has faced downward pressure due to aggressive vehicle discounting and surging investments in AI. With China’s BYD already reporting over 17 million new energy vehicles built, Tesla’s race to satisfy its board-mandated product goals is becoming increasingly complex.
