Base Power Secures $1 Billion to Decentralize the Grid

Base Power currently installs roughly 100 units daily and aims to double that rate by year-end, totaling 8 megawatt-hours of new capacity every 24 hours. To support this growth, the Austin-based firm launched the Base Core, a proprietary home battery capable of storing 39.2 kilowatt-hours. Unlike traditional installers that charge high upfront costs, Base Power utilizes a subscription model. Customers pay an installation fee and monthly rate, while the company retains control of the device to sell stored power back to the grid during peak demand surges.

The timing of this capital infusion aligns with a massive spike in electricity consumption driven by data centers and widespread electrification. With operations in Texas and Illinois, the company is positioning its fleet to alleviate stress on regions like PJM, where grid capacity has lagged behind industrial demand. Beyond grid support, the batteries function as reliable backup power for homeowners during outages. Co-founded by CEO Zach Dell, the company attracted a massive syndicate of investors, including Ribbit, Addition, Valor Equity Partners, and JPMorganChase’s Strategic Investment Group.
