John Ternus Defends Apple’s Measured Approach to Artificial Intelligence

Ternus addressed criticisms of Apple’s perceived lag during a discussion with Wired’s Steven Levy, specifically regarding the delayed rollout of its upgraded Siri interface. While competitors have aggressively pushed AI-first features, Ternus insisted that Apple’s strategy remains focused on utility rather than the novelty of the underlying tech. He argued that when the company executes its vision correctly, users should not need to distinguish between traditional software and AI-driven processes.

The executive emphasized that Apple intends to leverage AI, but only when it enhances the user experience in a meaningful way. Addressing concerns that autonomous agents might eventually render traditional apps obsolete, Ternus maintained a human-centric outlook. He suggested that while extreme automation could simplify tasks, the act of crafting products remains a deeply personal endeavor that Apple is not looking to outsource to algorithms.
