The Big Money Behind the Venture Boom

The venture ecosystem has shifted from a model of broad diversification to one of concentrated bets. Beezer Clarkson of LGT Capital Partners and Amit Bhatti of TrueBridge note that while traditional portfolios once spread risk across varied sectors, current capital flows heavily into a narrow set of AI leaders. This trend is driven by a 'power law' reality where, for many investors, missing out on the next breakout company is a greater risk than ignoring the risks of overlap.

However, the rapid return of venture firms to the fundraising market—often on 12 to 18-month cycles—has sparked concern. Both Clarkson and Bhatti describe this compressed pacing as a 'yellow light,' noting that mid-cycle fund upsizes have become common to accommodate inflated check sizes. While liquidity is beginning to circulate through secondaries and M&A, the pressure remains on general partners to prove their strategies can survive a market correction. Despite these strains, the appetite for emerging managers persists, provided they can demonstrate a clear, differentiated edge rather than simply chasing the massive capital rounds currently defining the industry.
