Netflix Elevates Marketing Stunt Above Sunset Boulevard

While the 90-degree heat made the inclusion of air conditioning a necessity rather than a luxury, the stunt signals a shift in strategy for a streaming giant struggling to maintain its momentum. Netflix has increasingly leaned into unconventional physical activations to capture audience attention, a departure from its traditional reliance on algorithmic recommendations. The move arrives as the company faces mounting pressure; recent releases, including Kevin Hart’s 72 Hours, have failed to match the performance of previous hits. Investors remain wary, evidenced by an 8% dip in share prices last month following lackluster revenue guidance.

Jonathan Helfgot, Netflix’s vice president of marketing, defends the high-visibility approach, claiming the value of such visceral connections is immense. This follows a similar April campaign where Charlize Theron was suspended on a climbing rig in Times Square to promote Apex. Despite the corporate stakes, Shoop maintained a detached perspective on the assignment. When asked if the billboard residency was his most lucrative union gig recently, he held up a whiteboard to the street below with a pointed question: “We’re being paid?”
