The surge in demand was immediate. Following a June report about the company's fundraising plans, Ghodsi saw interest reach $15 billion from a select group of backers. To avoid alienating long-term venture capital partners, Databricks expanded the round, ultimately closing at a $190 billion valuation. The deal, led by Coatue, includes participation from Blackstone, MGX, T. Rowe Price, and Sixth Street Growth.
Financial performance remains the primary driver of this investor appetite. Databricks reports an annualized run-rate revenue of $7 billion, growing at 80% with positive cash flow. The company’s cloud data warehouse alone accounts for $1.5 billion of that revenue, doubling year-over-year. Beyond core infrastructure, Databricks has aggressively integrated AI, with its Genie chatbot and Lakebase agent database seeing rapid adoption.
Despite the massive capital influx, Ghodsi maintains that the funds are necessary to sustain the extreme costs of AI research and cloud infrastructure commitments. The company also continues an active M&A strategy, recently acquiring PGlite maker Electric and cybersecurity firm Panther. While persistent rumors suggest an eventual public offering, Ghodsi remains focused on private growth, citing the luxury of operating away from public market scrutiny while maintaining such high-level investor interest.
