Ibrahim’s professional foundation was built on grit rather than algorithms. Her early years were defined by the immigrant experience of her parents, who navigated significant personal hardships to establish careers in the United States. This environment instilled in her a work ethic that propelled her from a high school lab studying fruit-fly DNA to a degree in electrical engineering at Purdue University.
Her career path was unconventional, spanning nearly two decades at Intel, where she eventually served as chief of staff to the CEO, managing an organization of 85,000 employees. After a stint as president and chief operating officer at Coursera, she joined DeepMind in 2018. When she stepped into her current role this year, she leaned into her identity as an outsider—a position she has occupied throughout her life. Her mandate now involves preparing global institutions for the societal shifts triggered by artificial intelligence, a task she approaches by viewing her lack of a traditional research background as a strategic advantage rather than a deficit.
