The capital injection targets companies developing critical materials and processing capabilities. Coreshell secured $50 million to scale its metallurgical silicon anode production, while Lilac Solutions received $100 million to establish a lithium extraction facility at Utah’s Great Salt Lake. Nth Cycle also landed $100 million to refine recycled battery components, such as nickel and lithium, directly addressing the need for a localized supply chain.
Defense applications now drive significant interest, with military demand spanning infantry radios, drones, and advanced fighter jets. While the automotive industry remains a massive player—projected to spend nearly $18 billion on domestic battery manufacturing this year—the defense sector offers a more stable, albeit smaller, alternative for firms reeling from the recent reduction in EV subsidies. The Pentagon’s consistent need for lightweight, high-performance power sources ensures that these startups remain viable even as the broader commercial market experiences a period of prolonged, uncertain growth.
